Medicines containing oxedrine (synephrine) are no longer available in many countries. Sympalept is out of commerce.

Structure and properties

Oxedrine (C9H13NO2, Mr = 167.21 g/mol) is a structurally related to epinephrine and is present in drugs as oxedrine tartrate. It is also referred to as synephrine.

Effects

Oxedrine (ATC C01CA08) has sympathomimetic properties and increases blood pressure. The effects are due to binding to alpha and beta adrenoceptors.

Indications

For the treatment of low blood pressure.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, headache, tremor, dizziness, chills, and palpitations.
