Oxiconazole

Oxiconazole was commercially available in the form of vaginal tablets (Oceral). It was approved in many countries since 1983. It was discontinued in 2017.

Structure and properties

Oxiconazole (C18H13Cl4N3O, Mr = 429.1 g/mol) is present in drugs as oxiconazole nitrate. It is an imidazole derivative.

Effects

Oxiconazole (ATC D01AC11, ATC G01AF17) has antifungal properties effective against dermatophytes, yeasts, other fungi, and some Gram-positive bacteria. The effects are due to inhibition of ergosterol synthesis by the fungi.

Indications

For the treatment of vaginal fungus.

Dosage

According to the professional information. The tablets are usually inserted deep into the vagina once as a single dose in the evening before sleeping. A second dose is possible if needed.

Contraindications
