Oxytetracycline Eye Ointment

Products

No ophthalmic ointments containing oxytetracycline are commercially available in many countries. In Germany, one preparation is available from Jenapharm.

Structure and properties

Oxytetracycline (C22H24N2O9, Mr = 460.4 g/mol) is present in the ointment as oxytetracycline hydrochloride, a yellow, crystalline, hygroscopic powder that is readily soluble in water. The substance is obtained from certain strains of or prepared by other methods.

Effects

Oxytetracycline (ATC S01AA04) has bacteriostatic properties. The effects are due to inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S subunit of ribosomes.

Indications

For the treatment of bacterial infections of the anterior segment of the eye.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The ointment is usually given into the eye three to six times daily. See also under Administering ophthalmic ointments.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Tuberculosis of the eye, fungal infections of the eye.
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Children under 8 years

Interactions

Drug-drug interactions may be possible with hormonal contraceptives.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects rarely include allergic reactions and photodermatoses. Visual disturbances may occur immediately after administration.
