Pain after a root canal filling

Especially directly on the day or after the application, the patient may experience slight throbbing and knocking discomfort, which usually disappears completely after two days. The root filling is always only an attempt to save the affected tooth. The prognosis is quite good, but it is always possible that the symptoms will not subside even after an optimal root filling.

As a rule, the treating physician tries to ensure that the bacteria die off more quickly and the symptoms subside by administering antibiotics. If there is no relief from the pain after two to four months, a new X-ray should be taken for diagnosis. If the root filling is optimal and an inflammation is still visible under the root tip, the indication for a revision of a root canal treatment is given.

The root canal treatment is then carried out again. If the revision was also unsuccessful, an apicoectomy can be considered. The inflamed area under the root tip is surgically exposed, cleaned and the tip of the root is separated. If necessary, a retrograde root filling can be added to seal the tooth. Root tip resection is considered a last resort to save the tooth before extraction.

Cost of a root canal filling

The majority of the costs for a root canal filling are paid by the health insurance. However, there are two services that are not covered by the statutory health insurance. These include the electrical resistance measurement to determine the length of the root canal and the activation of the irrigation solution by electrochemical methods. Both methods require expensive equipment, which is covered by a private contribution.

The price per service is a little less than 10 Euro, which is charged per canal. This means that a co-payment of about 20 Euro for both services must be paid for one channel, and 60 Euro for three channels. Specialists in endodontics, which describes the science of diagnostics and therapy of pulp diseases, often use more expensive machine files or a thermoplastic filling, which they charge separately.

This can range from 50 Euro to 200 Euro per channel as a co-payment, which is justified by the additional effort and the higher quality materials used. These high quality methods ensure that the prognosis of tooth preservation is increased by an optimal root filling. The patient should make inquiries in advance and negotiate a price and be informed in order to be on the safe side.
