Pain all the way into the ear

Gingivitis can often lead to inflammation of the throat and pharynx due to the presence of bacteria. The ears and throat are very close together in their function. For example, the pressure balance of the ears is regulated by swallowing.

If swallowing is difficult, for example due to swelling of the tonsils or pain in the gums, the pressure balance can be disturbed. This can also cause pain in the ear. Often the ears also hurt when wisdom teeth are inflamed. The gums are often swollen when the wisdom tooth has not yet grown out properly. Due to the proximity between the upper jaw, cheek teeth and the auditory canal, an inflammation can easily spread to neighboring structures.

Throbbing/pulsating pain

This type of pain can have several causes. The reason that you can feel the pain in the rhythm of the pulse is that the blood circulation is increased. This creates a pressure, but it cannot escape properly.

In the case of gingivitis, the pressure moves to the gums. This causes a swelling. Since the gums cannot be stretched indefinitely, the pressure in the gums also increases.

If such a pressure arises in the area of the dental nerve inside the tooth, the pressure can escape even less. The only possibility is to take the path via the small hole at the tip of the root. As the nerves enter and exit there, the same pain occurs as in severe gingivitis. The pain then indicates that the dental nerve is already dead.

The same pattern of pain also occurs with a wisdom tooth that has not yet broken through. The gums are usually inflamed at this point because the tooth presses against them. It is important to see a dentist as soon as possible, because when the pain is so severe that it is already throbbing, the inflammation is already well advanced.

A tip is not to do heavy work or sports, otherwise the blood pressure will continue to rise and the pain will get worse. It is best to position the head higher than the heart so that the blood can drain away. You should avoid lying down and instead sleep in a half-sitting position. It is important to note that this type of pain is not limited to gum inflammation. On the other hand, one must consider that an inflammation of the gums can be just as painless.
