Pain during external rotation

If the hip hurts when turning outwards, this may indicate arthrosis. However, this movement can also be painful after a strain or a fall. The best way to rule out a fracture is to take an X-ray.

If the leg is turned outwards after a fall and is painful and possibly shortened compared to the opposite side, this is a strong indication of a femoral neck fracture. A joint blockage in the hip joint can lead to pain when the leg is turned outwards. Often the outward rotation is then no longer possible at all.

However, inflammation of the hip joint (arthritis), bursitis and other causes are also possible. It is advisable to consult a specialist who knows how to distinguish between the individual possibilities.
