Pain during Sexual Intercourse (Dyspareunia): Medical History

Medical history (history of the patient) is an important component in the diagnosis of dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse).

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed any burning, pulling, or pain during or after sexual intercourse?
    • Pain in the area of the entirety of the external primary sex organs, vaginal entrance, and vagina?
    • Pain during sexual intercourse deep inside the abdomen?
  • When exactly does the discomfort occur:
    • When inserting the member?
    • Only during intercourse?
    • After urination?
  • How long does the pain last?
  • How do you feel the pain in different situations: please indicate whether you have an increase, decrease or no change under
    • Stress?
    • Vacation?
    • Alcohol consumption?
  • Do the symptoms occur with every sexual intercourse?
  • Does the discomfort also occur with oral stimulation or masturbation?
  • Do you have lubrication disorders, that is, the vagina is not sufficiently moist during arousal?
  • Do you feel sexual arousal during intercourse?
  • How do you behave when you perceived the pain?
  • Have you decreased the frequency of sexual intercourse because of the discomfort?
  • Do you have partnership problems?
