General information
About the pain that can arise from the stinging of a tattoo (tattoo), can hardly be made generally valid statements. In principle, they depend mainly on the individual pain perception of a person and the body part to which the tattoo is applied. Do you already have a freshly engraved tattoo?
Causes
First of all, of course, it must be said that tattoos are made by getting the color for the tattoo under the skin. Since this causes injury to the skin and creates a wound, it is only logical that the process of tattooing can not be completely painless. Nevertheless, each person feels the pain, not only when tattooing, but in principle, differently.
While one person describes the process of tattooing as unpleasant or as a slight pressing or rubbing, there are others who get tears in their eyes and perceive the pain as almost unbearable. In addition, of course, it always simply depends on the daily form in which you are at the time of the tattoo stinging. Depending on the other mental and physical condition it can come to an increased or decreased pain sensation.
Beside individual factors, the place where the tattoo is stung is also very important, as how strong the pain during this process is described. Basically the following applies: The worst pain occurs at the places where the skin covers the bone relatively directly, so there is little subcutaneous tissue (therefore it usually hurts much less on the thigh or upper arm, for example, than on the shoulder blade or the sole of the foot). The thickness of the skin at the puncture site also plays a role.
Furthermore, it can be said that there are certain “sensitive areas” for each person where they are more sensitive to pain, which sometimes differ from person to person. Often the inner sides of the arms or legs or the kidney area are mentioned here. In general, the most intense pain is felt in the intimate area of a tattoo.
Apart from the pain, which is practically a “symptom” of tattooing, the place where the tattoo is pricked can also bleed. However, this should normally only be very slight bleeding, which also quickly subsides by itself. If the tattoo is not cleanly stung or if dirt gets into the wound, the tattoo can become inflamed.
This also sometimes causes pain, redness, swelling and overheating of the affected area. Only in very extreme cases there are also systemic reactions like fever. Occasionally a tattoo can also lead to an allergic reaction, for example, if there is an allergy to the dye used. Also in such a case, pain, redness and overheating can occur, and the surrounding skin can also change accordingly.
