Pain in the back of the foot at different times of the day

Pain in the back of the foot, which occurs mainly at rest or at night, can be a neural cause. Such nerve pain is often accompanied by other symptoms such as sensation (e.g. tingling) or a changed feeling in the skin. Burning or stabbing foot pain also occurs in so-called diabetic neuropathy, a damage to the body’s nerves caused by the chronically elevated blood sugar level in diabetes mellitus, especially at night when sleeping.

In the morning, pain in the back of the foot is particularly pronounced in the case of injuries accompanied by bruising and swelling. The foot is stretched during the night and is still moved in the morning in a “cold state”, which causes pain. These complaints often improve the longer the ankle is moved again.

Arthrosis, an inflammatory joint disease and wear and tear of the joint cartilage also very often causes a typical “starting pain” in the morning. The first steps in the morning and after long periods of rest are then very painful. In most cases, “warming up” of the joints through movement leads to an improvement of the symptoms.
