Pain in the hollow of the knee

Pain in the hollow of the knee after an external meniscus lesion can have several causes.A developed Baker cyst, which restricts movement in the long term and provokes swelling, can be a cause. This should be checked and removed if necessary.

Summary

Pain in the outer meniscus can be caused by a tear or blockage of the meniscus. Trauma in which the knee makes a strong rotational movement but the lower leg is fixed is the most common cause. A blockage is usually caused by a quick extension after long periods of sitting.

In the case of a lesion, the tear usually requires surgical suturing. Afterwards, a careful follow-up treatment should be performed. The load is increased only slowly and the exercises become more complex only after a possible full load.

It is important to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee. This improves stability. Coordination training and balance training are part of the physiotherapeutic program.
