Pain in the incisor

Introduction

Patients often suffer greatly when an incisor is painful. This is an unpleasant feeling, often accompanied by the fear that the tooth will fall out or look unattractive after treatment. Especially missing front teeth are immediately noticeable. So the affected person postpones his visit to the doctor and the pain gets worse and worse. Therefore, a visit to the dentist should take place at the latest one week after the pain begins.

Causes

A sore incisor is not uncommon. The reasons are the same as for the other teeth, but with a small peculiarity. Because of their exposed position in the jaw, they are particularly often affected by trauma (injuries) and force of any kind.

It can happen that the front teeth break off, are knocked out or pushed into or out of the tooth socket (called intrusion and extrusion). The type of damage depends on the direction of the force and its size. Apart from this special case, the usual causes of toothache also apply.

These include larger carious lesions, secondary caries on an existing restoration, as well as a recently placed or poorly placed filling. An inflammation of the root tip can also cause pain. Exposed tooth necks and braces are also considered.

Accompanying Symtoms

Usually the toothache is accompanied by many other symptoms. The most typical signs of inflammation are: swelling, redness and increased temperature. If these symptoms occur, there is a high probability that the painful tooth has become inflamed.

This should be checked by a doctor as soon as possible to prevent the inflammation from spreading to the surrounding tissue. Swelling is most often found on the gums between the lip and tooth, less often on the palate. The redness is caused by an increase in temperature and is visible on the face.

It often affects the cheeks or the area directly above the tooth. Especially in the case of trauma, it is possible that soft tissues can be injured. During a hard fall it happens from time to time that teeth or objects pierce the lip or cheek.

A laceration with strong blood flow is the result. The wounds must be cleaned and disinfected thoroughly afterwards, otherwise they become infected quite quickly. A reddening with pus formation would be the result.
