Introduction

Pain in the colon can have different causes. Individual diseases that lead to pain in the colon are listed below. Pain in the colon can be caused by irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a group of functional bowel diseases that occur very frequently in the population. The patient feels an unspecific pain and discomfort in the abdomen. In addition, the stool habits change.

Irritable bowel syndrome can be accompanied by diarrhea (diarrhea-predominant) or constipation (constipation-predominant). Constipation and diarrhoea can occur alternately, so that one speaks of an irritable bowel syndrome with changing stool habits. Irritable bowel syndrome is also often accompanied by chronic pelvic pain, fibromyalgia and mental illness.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic fiber-muscle pain with changing localization. Patients often mistakenly believe that they have a food intolerance to lactose or starch, as the symptoms can become more severe when these multiple sugars are consumed. However, in most cases this is a misconception. The intensified symptoms can usually be attributed to a temporary small intestine malpopulation.

Causes

The causes of irritable bowel syndrome are still partly unclear. It is suspected that there is an interplay of psychological and organic factors that cause the symptoms. Important risk factors are a sugar disease (diabetes mellitus) and gluten sensitivity.

Therapy

The treatment of irritable bowel syndrome is limited to dietary counseling if the symptoms are mild. If the cause lies in a small intestine malpopulation, high-dose antibiotics can be administered. For the relief of the diarrhoea, laxative-inhibiting agents can be used, and to counteract constipation, laxatives are administered accordingly. For psychological causes, psychotherapy is also recommended.
