Pain in the morning

Some people complain of pain in their feet as soon as they get up in the morning. The foot instep is also affected or the pain cannot be localized exactly.Pain at rest and after waking up can often be an indication of a basic illness. If the pain occurs together with impaired mobility, a chronic disease could be the underlying cause.

This could be arthrosis due to wear and tear or a rheumatic disease. Chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or rheumatism can cause the pain. Another possible cause can be diabetes mellitus, which can lead to various nerve disorders, especially in the foot area.

With numbness, pain can also occur. These complaints are summarized under the general term polyneuropathy. Constant strain due to congenital malpositions such as knock-knees, bow legs, flat feet, splayfoot or hallux valgus can also cause pain at rest.

Pain on the back of the foot can have different causes and therefore the treatment can also be very different. In general, if complaints occur, the affected foot should be spared first. If the pain persists for a longer period of time, an examination by a doctor is usually necessary.

Incorrect and overloading, which can also be caused by various defective positions of the foot, should be treated by an orthopedic surgeon. It is possible that the malpositioning of the foot or even the knock-knees/knees will have to be corrected. Overloading can also be caused by the wrong footwear.

Especially athletes should pay attention to the correct fitting pair of running shoes. These should not be too tight on the foot and still stabilize the ankle joint. A longer treatment with physiotherapy can also be helpful to strengthen the muscles and tendons.

Physiotherapy often includes treatments with cold and heat, which helps to alleviate the symptoms. In the case of acute bacterial inflammation or chronic inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, appropriate drug therapy is often used. The patient can take pain-relieving medication such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.

In order to reduce the inflammation, anti-inflammatory drugs are also prescribed especially for chronic inflammatory diseases. These are often cortisone.
