Pain of the outer thigh

The outer thigh is supplied by the lateral femoral cutaneus nerve, which supplies the outer thigh. In this area, the muscles are covered by a large tendon, the tractus iliotibialis, which is often the starting point of the pain event. Incorrect loading or sticking of this sinewy tractus can lead to isolated pain in the outer thigh.

Incorrect and excessive strain is caused, for example, by walking with a broad leg or by the presence of knock-knees. Often in this case, the knees are also affected by the malposition and are subject to increased stress, which leads to degeneration and restriction of movement. In addition, the supplying nerve can be compressed by the undercrossing of the inguinal ligament and thus become irritated.

Pain of the back thigh

Pain in the back of the thigh is usually associated with the sciatic nerve. It can become trapped and irritated at various points along its course and, in addition to pain in the thigh, can also cause back pain, coccyx pain, buttock pain or even pain in the lower leg and foot. The nerve also emerges from the spinal canal at the level of the lower lumbar spine and runs through a hole in the pelvis, which is divided by the piriformis muscle, along the inner back of the thigh to the hollow of the knee.

In its course it is directly covered by the posterior thigh muscles. The irritation of this nerve can be caused by a lumbar disc herniation or a hardening of the gluteal muscles. The piriformis muscle is particularly important here, as it is located in the immediate vicinity of the nerve and is often tense and can lead to permanent compression of the nerve.

In many cases, the wrong sitting posture also leads to increased strain on the back of the thigh or buttocks. For example, a lying position in a chair, which initially gives the impression of being relaxed, leads to permanent tension of the back thigh muscles. In addition to this frequent nervous cause, the muscle fasciae on the back of the thigh can also become sticky.
