Painkillers in the nursing period

Introduction

Through breast milk, children usually receive all the important nutrients they need, especially in the first months of their lives. However, breastfeeding can also be used to transfer substances, such as components of medication, which can have a negative effect on the child’s organism. The potentially harmful effect of medications that can be transmitted through the breastfeeding process is due to the child’s metabolic system, which is still incompletely developed.

Breastfeeding mothers should therefore be careful when taking medication. Before taking painkillers, one should always check whether they are permitted during the breastfeeding period. As a rule of thumb for breastfeeding mothers, the dose of approved painkillers should be kept as low as possible. Prolonged use of painkillers should only be taken after consulting a doctor.

Mexalen® is an analgesic consisting of the active ingredient paracetamol. Its effects include pain reduction and fever reduction. Paracetamol in the form of Mexalen®, for example, is the painkiller of choice during pregnancy and lactation.

This drug can be used for mild to moderate pain, such as headaches or toothache, for fever and/or pain during colds or flu. There have been numerous studies on the use of paracetamol in pregnancy and lactation. These studies concluded that the use of paracetamol within the recommended dosage range is considered safe for the child.

No significant evidence of intolerance on the part of the infant could be found. However, paracetamol should only be taken by the nursing mother for a short period of time. It is also important to follow the dosage according to the manufacturer’s instructions and not to exceed the maximum dose.

If Paracetamol or Mexalen® is taken for a longer or higher dose, no statements can be made about the tolerability or potential harm to the infant. Paracetamol, or Mexalen®, should not be taken if there are known allergies to the active ingredient or liver damage. In these cases, ibuprofen can be used.
