PainSymptoms of rotator cuff rupture

The symptoms of a rotator cuff rupture can be varied. This is due to the fact that the rotator cuff at the shoulder joint consists of a complex network of many tendons, ligaments, muscles and tissues, which become more susceptible to injury with increasing age. A rotator cuff rupture is therefore associated with great pain and limitations for those affected, making it easy to diagnose.

Symptoms

As already indicated, the symptoms of a rotator cuff rupture can be varied. This is because different parts of the rotator cuff can be affected by the injury. The main symptom in all injuries, however, is the sudden onset of stabbing pain, which can be very severe.

  • The pain alone already significantly limits the patient’s freedom of movement of the shoulder. Especially lifting the arm above the head is hardly possible anymore. The pain often persists even when the patient is at rest and is intensified by pressure on the affected shoulder, e.g. when lying down, so that this is hardly possible anymore.
  • If nerves are also affected by the injury, there may be tingling and numbness in the arms, or even complete loss of sensation in the case of severe damage.
  • Large traumatic tears can also lead to a so-called pseudoparalysis. The affected person is then no longer able to lift the arm above shoulder height.
  • Especially in the case of accident-related injuries to the rotator cuff, a rupture can lead to bleeding, which causes localized swelling of the tissue and bruising, which additionally increases the pain.
  • In addition to the pain, the functional mobility of the shoulder in a rotator cuff rupture can also be limited, which can make everyday movements extremely difficult.
