The exact mechanisms of action of pansies are not yet known in detail. However, the contained flavonoids, triterpenes and methyl salicylates seem to have anti-inflammatory and secretolytic, that is, facilitating the expectoration of mucous bronchial secretions. This would sometimes make the folk medicine use of pansies plausible.
