Papule: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate a papule or papules (raised area of skin; nodule):

Leading symptoms

  • Solid, circumscribed elevation of the skin <1.0 cm in diameter

Warning signs (Red flags)

  • Children + brown or skin-colored papules around the nose → think: tuberous sclerosis (autosomal dominant inherited disease; symptoms: Malformations and tumors of the brain, skin changes, and usually benign (benign) tumors in other organ systems).
  • Papule with dark blue or blue-black color + increasing spread → think of: malignant melanoma (black skin cancer); Kaposi syndrome (a cancer occurring in connection with AIDS).
  • Severely itchy rash with papules + worsening of symptoms at night → think of: Scabies (scabies)
