Parathyroid Hyperfunction (Hyperparathyroidism): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism.

Family history

  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?
  • What is the general health of your family members?

Social anamnesis

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms/discomforts (e.g., flank pain/pain in the kidney area) have you noticed?
  • If urinary/kidney stones are known: Have you had a spontaneous stone discharge (urinary stones/kidney stones)?
  • Do you have any upper abdominal discomfort?
  • Do you suffer from nausea or vomiting?
  • Do you suffer from bone pain? Have you had any bone fractures recently?
  • Have you been tired or listless frequently lately?
  • Do you often feel depressed out of sorts?
  • Do you suffer from concentration difficulties?
  • Do you suffer from muscle weakness?
  • Have your reflexes decreased?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Has your digestion changed? Do you have frequent diarrhea or constipation?
  • Do you have increased thirst?
  • Do you have to urinate more?
  • Do you drink alcohol regularly?

Medication history

  • Antiepileptic drugs
  • Lithium – drug used in bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) for phase prophylaxis.
  • Thiazides (diuretics (diuretic drugs)).
