Parodontax® – toothpaste

Introduction

Many people suffer from bleeding gums – especially at an advanced age. Gum bleeding is due to a bacterial inflammation of the periodontium. Parodontax® toothpaste is a toothpaste which has an antibacterial effect and thus prevents bacterial inflammation.

It is especially used against bleeding gums. Parodontax® is produced by the British pharmaceutical company Glaxo Smith Kline. The toothpaste is available in four variants: “fluoride”, “classic fluoride-free”, “natural white” and “extra fresh”.

Indications

The so-called parodontium (the periodontium) holds the tooth firmly in the jawbone. It consists of gum, tooth cement, bony tooth socket and periodontal membrane. However, the periodontium can become inflamed due to a settlement of plaque bacteria (dental plaque).

This is then called “periodontitis“. Among other things, this causes the gums to recede and the jawbone to resorb. This means that the bone can no longer hold the tooth so firmly.

Subsequently, the tooth can become loose, which in the worst case leads to tooth loss. The first signs of periodontitis are bleeding gums and inflammation of the gums. The gums also recede. The Parodontax® toothpaste helps to fight the periodontitis and the associated symptoms and to prevent its recurrence.

Effect

The most important effect of Parodontax® toothpaste is to prevent inflammation of the gums or the periodontium. Gum bleeding is also related to the inflammation and is combated with Parodontax® toothpaste. The colonization by plaque bacteria is the cause of these symptoms.

Parodontax® toothpaste contains sodium bicarbonate particles. These particles break through the plaque and help to remove the plaque. This also removes the bacteria that are in the plaque.

By removing the bacteria, the risk of inflammation is reduced. According to the manufacturer, this increases the effectiveness compared to other toothpastes. Both the direct inflammation of the gums and the inflammation of the periodontium should be effectively prevented.

Besides sodium bicarbonate, the toothpaste contains various herbs. On the one hand these are beneficial for a fresh taste. In addition, various herbs (chamomile, sage) are said to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.

This also prevents inflammation in the mouth. Sage, myrrh and ratanhia are also said to have a protective effect on the mucous membranes of the mouth. If Parodontax® Classic (without fluoride) is not chosen, the toothpaste also contains fluoride, which strengthens the enamel and prevents the formation of caries.

The Parodontax® toothpaste includes a fluoride version. The fluoride concentration is 1400 ppm (parts per million = mg/kg). In our mouth, acids are produced by plaque bacteria, which are found in our mouth.

These plaque bacteria metabolize sugar, which is absorbed through our food. These acids, which are formed from the sugar, attack the tooth if the enamel is not strong enough. The result is the occurrence of caries in the teeth.

However, fluoride strengthens the teeth by supplying minerals to the enamel. The resistant enamel is now better equipped to resist the acids that would otherwise damage the tooth. The Parodontax® toothpaste is also available without the fluoride enrichment.

Since there is much discussion about whether fluoride is potentially dangerous for the human body, some people deliberately avoid substances that are enriched with fluoride. It should be said that there are no known negative effects of fluoride in the dosages that are commonly used. In the body, fluoride is an important component of bones and teeth. If one decides to avoid fluoride, one can resort to Parodontax® toothpaste without fluoride. This might also be of interest to you: Toothpaste without fluoride
