Benzoic acid and its derivatives have a strong antibacterial effect, which is why its use as an antiseptic can be understood. Perubalsam further promotes wound healing because it stimulates the granulation process, that is, the formation of new connective tissue and small vessels on wounds. The ester of benzoic acid is also effective against certain parasites, such as itch mites.
