Pfeiffer’s Glandular Fever (Infectious Mononucleosis): Diagnostic Tests

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnosticsand obligatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs) – for suspected hepatitis (liver inflammation).
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG; recording of the electrical activity of the heart muscle) – if heart involvement is suspected.
  • Echocardiography (echo; heart ultrasound) – if myopericarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle and pericardium) is suspected.
  • X-ray of the chest (X-ray thorax/chest), in two planes – if pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs) is suspected.
  • Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen (abdominal CT) – when tumor diseases such as EBV-associated lymphomas (tumors of the lymphatic tissue) are suspected.
  • Computed tomography of the thorax/chest (thoracic CT) – in suspected tumor diseases such as the EBV-associated lymphomas (tumors of the lymphatic tissue).
  • Magnetic resonance imaging of the skull (cranial MRI, cranial MRI or cMRI) – in suspected EBV-associatedTumor diseases of the head such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma (cancer of the nasopharynx).
