PH value of the vagina

Introduction

The normal pH value of a healthy vagina is normally between 3.8 and 4.5, which puts it in the acidic range. In the rear part of the vagina, lower values are measured than at the entrance of the vagina. The acidic pH values of the vagina are achieved by the natural vaginal flora, which is made up of various naturally occurring microorganisms. The so-called lactobacilli, also known as lactic acid or Döderlein bacteria, make a significant contribution to the production and maintenance of an acidic pH value. However, the normal pH value of the vagina is susceptible to disturbances and can increase, especially when the lactic acid bacteria are reduced under antibiotic treatment, and promote the occurrence of infections.

How can the pH value in the vagina be measured?

There are several methods for measuring the pH value of the vagina. It is possible to have the measurement carried out by a gynecologist, who can determine the pH value with the help of a smear. If necessary, a microbiological examination can also be carried out in this way to determine the presence of pathogens.

This is particularly useful if the pH value is alkaline and there is a symptom-based suspicion of an infection. There are also procedures that can be carried out independently at home. These include pH measurement strips that can be purchased in the pharmacy without a prescription.

These are provided with indicator paper and are inserted a few centimeters deep into the vagina. If there is contact with vaginal secretion, the color of the indicator paper changes and the current pH value can be read. pH gloves work in a similar way, with the indicator surface on the inside of the index finger of the glove.

The index finger is inserted into the vagina with the glove on. Here too, a color change takes place, which indicates the pH value. The independent measurement can be particularly useful during pregnancy. Higher pH values are an indication of a bacterial vaginal infection, which can lead to complications during pregnancy. Therefore, there are already some health insurance companies that pay for the self-measurement of the vaginal pH value during pregnancy.
