Physiotherapy | Exercises for a slipped disc during pregnancy

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy plays an important role in case of a slipped disc during pregnancy. Since the special circumstances of pregnancy limit the therapeutic options, physiotherapy in particular offers various treatment measures. These include heat and cold applications, gentle manual therapy, relaxing massages, relieving measures and targeted back training to loosen and strengthen the muscles. It is important that the treatment is carried out by a physiotherapist who is well versed in the therapy of pregnant women, so that the treatment is tailored to the needs and physical limitations and risks of pregnant women.

In general, doctors and therapists should work hand in hand in the event of a slipped disc during pregnancy in order to help the pregnant woman in the best possible way and to ensure a smooth course of the pregnancy. How the individual physiotherapeutic program looks like always depends on the individual situation, i.e. previous illnesses, location of the herniated disc, stage of pregnancy, etc. Also, the pregnant woman should feel well taken care of by her physiotherapist and should not hesitate to ask all possible questions in case of uncertainties. After the end of the physiotherapy it makes sense to continue to do the learned exercises regularly to prevent a herniated disc in the long term. Employment ban

A ban on employment is possible if the illness was caused by the pregnancy. A distinction must then be made between general employment prohibitions, which come into effect immediately upon announcement of the pregnancy (e.g. night work) and individual employment prohibitions, which result from the individual life situation. Also in the case of a herniated disc, it is possible that the doctor will issue a partial or complete employment ban.

This must be presented to the employer in the form of a certificate and must specify the restrictions in terms of content. The pregnant woman receives her full salary for the duration of the employment ban. This is paid partly by the employer and partly by the health insurance company.

If the pregnant woman is no longer able to work, the doctor will declare her incapacity to work and she will receive sick pay. If the herniated disc was diagnosed before the pregnancy and worsened by the physical changes during the pregnancy, a partial ban on employment can also be issued in this case. This should always be clarified with your doctor.
