Physiotherapy for breast cancer

The medical part about the disease breast cancer (mamma carcinoma) can be found under the topic breast cancer and therapy of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer disease of women in Germany. Every 7th woman will probably develop breast cancer during her lifetime.

The 5-year survival rate is over 70%, whereby the therapy procedures are selected as individually as possible in consultation with the affected patients. In most cases, surgery of varying degrees depending on the stage of the tumor, as well as radiation, hormone and/or chemotherapy (see also Chemotherapy for breast cancer) is necessary. Especially after surgery and radiotherapy, individual physiotherapy and/or group sports therapy is indicated in rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation after the operation is carried out in the medical, psychosocial and professional fields. Breast cancer has extensive physical, psychological and social consequences for the women affected, which depend in particular on the extent of the therapy performed and/or planned and the prognosis. The necessary surgical procedures depend on the tumor stage and lymph node involvement.

The spectrum ranges from a breast-conserving, minimally invasive procedure to a complete removal of the breast including the axillary lymph nodes. As a rule, a breast-conserving therapy with removal of the tumor is possible in about 80% of cases.
