Physiotherapy for carpal tunnel syndrome

In carpal tunnel syndrome, physiotherapy is the standard method of conservative therapy. The aim is to eliminate the constriction of the median nerve in order to improve the symptoms. In physiotherapeutic treatment, there are various therapy options available to achieve this goal, which are selected according to the individual situation of the patient. Therapy

The therapy of carpal tunnel syndrome depends mainly on the stage of the disease, the cause that contributed to its development, the age of the patient, the circumstances (possibly pregnancy), and the age and general health of the patient. Basically, the first step is to treat carpal tunnel syndrome conservatively. Patients are then prescribed physiotherapy, where an experienced therapist draws up a treatment plan.

Different therapy approaches are available: Physiotherapy: Physiotherapy with various exercises to strengthen and stretch the wrist structures is the cornerstone of a successful therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome, as this is intended to relieve the pressure from the median nerve and relieve the pain: Cold applications can be useful if there is already inflammation and the pain is too severe Manual therapy: various grip techniques of manual therapy are used to massage the wrist, loosen tendons and ligaments and move the joint passively Taping: The application of classical tape bandages or kinesiology tape is used to relieve and stabilize the wrist. At the same time the tissue is massaged and the pain is relieved. The exact treatment plan for physiotherapy varies from patient to patient.

If conservative measures do not achieve the desired success, surgery is usually performed.
