Physiotherapy | ISG complaints during pregnancy – exercises

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for ISG complaints during pregnancy can sometimes differ greatly from the treatment of a non-pregnant patient. While normally the problems are tried to be controlled with the help of mobilization, manipulation or massage techniques, this is only possible to a limited extent during pregnancy. Especially in more advanced stages of pregnancy, some of these techniques can even trigger premature contractions and stress mother and child.

In order to relieve the sacroiliac joint, it can be helpful to put on a pelvic belt, which takes the pressure off the ISG and thus helps to relieve and ease the pain. A very gentle mobilization, e.g. with very small circular pelvic movements, can also help to relieve the symptoms. Specially trained therapists can loosen the tense tissue by special pregnancy massages. However, since the ligaments around the sacroiliac joint are generally loosened by the hormonal changes during pregnancy, the symptoms cannot be completely treated. In many cases, a hot roll or fango pack is also good for those affected to relax and loosen the tense muscles a little.

ISG Blockade

ISG blockage can also occur frequently, especially in the later course of pregnancy. This is due to the fact that, on the one hand, the ligamentous apparatus, which normally supports and stabilizes the sacroiliac joint, is loosened during pregnancy and, on the other hand, the increasing weight of the unborn child places a greater strain on the lower part of the spine. An ISG blockage is noticeable to the affected person by pulling pain in the lower back and buttocks, which can also radiate into the legs. The pain is usually aggravated when the thigh is slightly bent forward or turned outwards on the affected side.

Triggers for an ISG blockage are usually small stumbles in everyday life, uneven surfaces or lifting heavy loads (which should generally not happen again during pregnancy!). ISG blockages should also be treated during pregnancy in order to minimize the stress and strain for the pregnant woman. Specially trained physiotherapists can also try to loosen the blockage during pregnancy with different therapy approaches and loosen the cramped muscles.
