Pimples in the throat

Introduction

A pus pimple in the throat is a raised skin or mucous membrane change in the area of the throat filled with pus. Pus pimples have the same basic characteristics as pimples on other parts of the body. In the throat area, they can be a very painful affair, which can reduce the quality of life of the person affected. Since the localization can make the treatment problematic, the healing process can be prolonged.

Symptoms

Pus pimples in the throat can cause a variety of symptoms of varying severity. The symptoms can be relatively insidious or slowly increasing or they can appear relatively suddenly. Pimples in the throat have the same appearance as pimples in other parts of the body.

This means that a slightly raised, painful, reddened, pus-filled skin change is visible. In some cases, the neighboring structures may also be swollen, reddened and painful. Watery, purulent secretion can escape from mature pus pimples.

Sometimes this causes bad breath and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. It can also lead to sore throat, chesty cough and difficulty swallowing. Depending on how long the symptoms persist, weight loss may also occur, as food intake can be difficult and painful.

In infants, the symptoms can manifest themselves in increased crying and “whining”, as well as in refusal to eat. Depending on the cause and, if applicable, causative underlying diseases, general malaise, a feeling of illness, swelling of lymph nodes, fever, chills and changes in skin and mucous membranes in other parts of the body may be caused. Due to the localization, sore throats can accompany the disease.

This can possibly be misinterpreted. But it is also possible that the pharyngeal mucosa is damaged after a throat infection and pus pimples develop as a result. This means that in this case the sore throat was there before or an infection preceded it.

If you are uncertain, a doctor should be contacted. The position of the pus pimples in the throat favors the development of swallowing difficulties. Swallowing can be difficult but painless.

In this case, the technical jargon speaks of dysphagia. Swallowing can also be painful. In medical terminology this is called odynophagia.

When the pus pimples have disappeared, the swallowing difficulties usually decrease. In the time when the complaints are present, the food should be as soft and appropriately tempered as possible. Pimples can theoretically also appear on the tongue.

This can be very unpleasant. Since the tongue is very sensitive, pus pimples on the tongue can also be very painful. The appearance of these pimples is similar to that of pimples in the throat.

The causes and diagnosis can also be similar to those of the pus pimples in the throat. It is important to exclude possible general diseases. In addition, pus pimples on the tongue can be caused, for example, by a tongue piercing.

In this context, contact allergy and/or bacterial inflammation can occur, which manifests itself in the form of pus pimples on the tongue. As with pus pimples in the throat, pus pimples on the tongue can also make it difficult to eat. As a result, weight loss can occur in the course of the symptoms.

In some cases, speaking is also restricted. The treatment depends on the causes. Again, if symptoms and uncertainties persist or recur, a doctor should be consulted.
