Piroxicam Gel

Piroxicam was commercially available in many countries in the form of a gel (Felden Gel). It had been approved in many countries since 1986. It was discontinued in 2018.

Structure and properties

Piroxicam (C15H13N3O4S, Mr = 331.4 g/mol) exists as a white to pale yellow crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It belongs to the group of oxicams.

Effects

Piroxicam (ATC M02AA07 has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of cyclooxygenase and inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins.

Indications

For the treatment of local inflammatory and painful conditions, for example, sports injuries, bruises, strains, back pain, tendonitis, and osteoarthritis.

Dosage

According to the professional information. The gel is rubbed in thinly three to four times a day until no residue is visible. The duration of treatment is usually one to two weeks. Do not apply over large areas.

Contraindications

Piroxicam is contraindicated in hypersensitivity, open injuries, in inflammation or infection of the skin, eczema, on mucous membranes, and in the last trimester of pregnancy. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Interactions with other drugs are not known.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as hypersensitivity reactions, skin irritation, redness, rash, desquamation, and itching.
