Piroxicam is commercially available in tablet form (Felden, generic). It has been approved in many countries since 1986. This article refers to peroral administration. See also under piroxicam gel (off label).
Structure and properties
Piroxicam (C15H13N3O4S, Mr = 331.4 g/mol) exists as a white to pale yellow crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It belongs to the group of oxicams.
Effects
Piroxicam (ATC M01AC01) has analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet properties. The effects are due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and inhibition of cyclooxygenases. Piroxicam has a long half-life of up to 50 hours.
Indications
As a 2nd-line agent for the treatment of symptoms of chronic polyarthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis (ankylosing spondylitis).
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Tablets are taken once daily with or immediately after a meal.

Numerous precautions and possible interactions must be observed when treating with piroxicam. Full details can be found in the drug label.
Adverse Effects
The most common possible adverse effects include digestive symptoms such as loss of appetite, abdominal pain, gastritis, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Other common side effects include drowsiness, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, depression, and other psychiatric disorders. Piroxicam may rarely cause serious side effects such as liver inflammation and stomach or intestinal ulcers.
