Plasmacytoma: Prevention

To prevent plasmacytoma, attention must be paid to reducing individual risk factors.

Behavioral risk factors

  • Diet
    • Micronutrient deficiency (vital substances) – see Prevention with micronutrients.
  • Overweight (BMI ≥ 25; obesity).

Environmental pollution – intoxications (poisoning).

  • Ionizing radiation
  • The following groups of people are frequently affected:
    • Workers in wood processing
    • Workers in the leather industry
    • Farmers
    • Persons with exposure to mineral oil

Prevention factors (protective factors)

  • Genetic factors:
    • Genetic risk reduction depending on gene polymorphisms:
      • Genes/SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism):
        • Gene: CASP9
        • SNP: rs1052576 in gene CASP9
          • Allele constellation: AG (0.80-fold).
          • Allele constellation: AA (0.50-fold)
  • High versus low leisure-time physical activity was associated with a lower risk of plasmacytoma (HR 0.83, 95% CI 0.72-0.95).
