Platelet donation

The donation of blood platelets (thrombocyte donation) is a procedure similar to plasma donation, in which 5 to 6 times more thrombocytes can be obtained than in a normal blood donation. In the donation process, only the platelets are removed from the donor’s blood via a “cell separator” and the remaining blood components are returned to the donor. The donation takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the device and platelet count. Since only a very small portion of the blood cells is removed, a platelet donation can be performed every 2 weeks, in addition to the normal whole blood donation.
