Postexposure prophylaxis (PEP)

Post-exposure prophylaxis is the provision of medication to prevent disease in individuals who are not protected against a particular disease by vaccination but have been exposed to it.

Indications (areas of application)

  • All contacts of poliomyelitis sufferers (regardless of vaccination status).

Implementation

  • Post-exposure vaccination with IPV (inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine) without delay.
  • Immediate comprehensive identification and determination of measures by the health authority.

A secondary case is cause for latch vaccinations with IPV. In addition, determination of further measures by order of the health authorities.
