Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of poliomyelitis (polio).

  • What is the general health status of your relatives?

Social history

  • Have you recently been in high-risk areas such as India or Nigeria?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed symptoms of an influenza infection in yourself?
  • Do you suffer from sore throat, muscle pain, back pain, headache? If so, for how long?
  • Do you feel nauseous more often? Do you have to vomit?
  • Have you noticed any neurological symptoms such as sensory disturbances or paralysis?* .
  • Have you noticed any painful neck stiffness?*
  • Do you have a fever? If so, how long has the temperature persisted and how high is it?
