Polio (Poliomyelitis): Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99).

  • Acute flaccid myelitis/spinal meningitis (Engl. acute flaccid myelitis, AFL) – initial symptoms are usually headache, fever, and meningismus (painful neck stiffness); other symptoms include focal asymmetric muscle weakness or paralysis (up to tetraplegia/simultaneous paralysis of all four limbs) that develops over hours to days; upper proximal extremities are usually affected; reflexes disappear but sensory function is preserved; loss of muscle tone and possibly also respiratory insufficiency (disturbance of external respiration leading to inadequate ventilation of the alveoli); transiently, bladder problems also possible ; rarely, encephalopathy (abnormal brain changes) may occur; cause. Enterovirus D68 (EV-D689 (see above; prevalence (disease frequency): extremely rare).
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS; synonyms: Idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, Landry-Guillain-Barré-Strohl syndrome); two courses: acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy or chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (disease of the peripheral nervous system); idiopathic polyneuritis (diseases of multiple nerves) of spinal nerve roots and peripheral nerves with ascending paralysis and pain; usually occurs after infections
  • Polyneuritis
  • Paraplegia

Injuries, poisonings and other consequences of external causes (S00-T98).

  • Traumatic paraplegia
