Polycythemia: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of polycythemia.

Family history

  • Is there a frequent history of cardiovascular disease, tumor disease in your family?

Social anamnesis

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed symptoms such as general weakness, headache, fatigue?
  • How long have these changes been present?
  • Do you suffer from upper abdominal discomfort?
  • Do you sweat more?
  • Do you suffer from itching? If so, when does this occur? After contact with water?
  • Do you hear ringing in the ears?
  • Do you have excessive skin redness?
  • Do you have any discomfort?
  • Do you feel dizzy?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Have you lost body weight unintentionally? Please tell us your body weight (in kg) and height (in cm).
  • How long can you put weight on yourself? Can you climb several flights of stairs without shortness of breath?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, tumor disease).
  • Operations
  • Allergies

Medication history

  • Androgens (through stimulation of erythropoiesis/blood formation).
  • EPO supply, e.g., in doping.
  • Steroids (by stimulating erythropoiesis).
