Products

Potato chips are available in numerous varieties in grocery stores. In many countries, bell pepper chips are the most commonly consumed (photo, click to enlarge). Incidentally, stacked chips such as Pringles are not considered potato chips because they are prepared from mashed potatoes, not sliced potatoes.

Ingredients

Potato chips are made from potatoes that have been cleaned, washed, peeled, sorted, finely chopped (< 1.5 mm), fried or baked with oil, and seasoned. They consist mainly of carbohydrates in the form of potato starch (about 50%) and of fat (over 30%). Other ingredients include little water, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, spices, flavors and flavor enhancers such as salt and glutamate.

Fields of application

As a snack / snack between meals.

Adverse effects

Potato chips have a high energy density and a correspondingly high calorific value of about 530 kcal per 100 g (!) They contain a lot of salt, fat and carbohydrates. If consumed in excess, they can promote the development of obesity and related diseases. Potato chips can also contain acrylamide, which is considered harmful to health. In recent years, however, efforts have been made by manufacturers to reduce acrylamide levels. Potato chips can be addictive and are often eaten in large quantities and uncontrollably – for example, immobilized in front of the television. Many people find it difficult to limit their own consumption.
