Pregnancy | Keppra®

Pregnancy

The use of Keppra® during pregnancy should be avoided if possible. It cannot be excluded that Keppra® increases the risk of birth defects or diseases of the unborn child. Animal experiments have probably shown that the drug has a negative effect on reproduction.

If the patients are indeed pregnant or if there is a suspicion that they are pregnant, they should inform their doctor immediately. In this case, one has to switch to a more tolerable and less dangerous drug in order not to endanger the foetus. Keppra® should also not be taken during the following breastfeeding period, as the active ingredient may possibly be transferred to the child via breast milk.
