Presbyopia: Definition, Treatment, Correction

Presbyopia develops in almost all people after the age of 40. Even if you still feel so young between 40 and 50 – presbyopia cannot be prevented even with sports and a healthy diet. After a certain age, most people need glasses to be able to read in a relaxed manner or to work on the computer. Nevertheless, no one has to feel old just because they suddenly have to rely on a visual aid. Varifocals can do it all and are the ideal companion for the active 40-plus generation.

With progressive glasses against age long-sightedness

  • From 40 onwards, presbyopia sets in.
  • The ideal solution for farsighted people is a pair of varifocals, with which sharp vision in the near and far range is possible.
  • Modern progressive lenses are comfortable to wear, fit into fashionable frames and are not so expensive.
  • Sunglasses and sports glasses can also be equipped with progressive lenses.

The bad news: at some point, presbyopia affects everyone.
The good news: no one has to put up with it. With varifocals, even farsighted people can read, watch TV, work or play sports without any problems and relaxed. Modern varifocals are like a kind of wellness for the eyes: they improve vision and add fashionable accents at the same time – and thus doubly ensure that their wearers feel comfortable and young. Even during sporting activities or on vacation, varifocals are ideal companions, as they also shine as sports glasses and sunglasses.

The truth about varifocals

Still many presbyopic people hesitate to go to the optician. This is mainly due to a lack of information. Yet varifocals are a tailor-made high-end product for active lifestyles – i.e. for work, sports and leisure.

Kerstin Kruschinski of the Kuratorium Gutes Sehen explains what prejudices there are and why they are completely unfounded:

Prejudice 1: I have to get used to progressive lenses with some effort, because they are intolerable at first.

Kruschinski: Spontaneous adaptation difficulties occur only rarely. And even against this, there are already the right lenses: They offer more sharpness in the transition zones between near and distance vision. This not only improves three-dimensional, i.e. spatial, vision. The spontaneous tolerance of the lenses is also significantly higher. This means that even newcomers to progressive vision usually do not have to go through an acclimatization phase. Some manufacturers even give a compatibility guarantee on their lenses.

Prejudice 2: Varifocals restrict the field of vision too much. I can’t see clearly with them when I’m cycling or jogging.

Kruschinski: With modern progressive lenses, the sharpness range of the lens is extended all the way down. The lateral edges of the field of vision, where slight distortion and blurring were the norm in the past due to the design, are now so narrow that they no longer interfere.

Prejudice 3: Varifocals are much too expensive.

Kruschinski: There is a wide selection of progressive lenses. Every manufacturer offers a wide range of lenses for different needs and budgets. In the meantime, even entry-level lenses are on a high quality level. Presbyopes between the ages of 40 and 50 in particular often only need a slight correction of their presbyopia.

Prejudice 4: There are too few modern frames for progressive lenses.

Kruschinski: In the past, progressive lenses still had to have a certain minimum size, so smaller or very flat frames were out of the question for progressive lens wearers. Today, it is no longer a problem to fit progressive lenses even in smaller current modern frames.
