Preventing a cold in toddlers and babies

Toddlers and babies are more often affected by colds than adults. This is because their immune system is not yet fully developed and pathogens can spread more easily in the body. Toddlers and babies often suffer from colds several times a year, but this is not a cause for concern, it is completely normal.

Homeopathic remedies can already be used in infancy, as they have very few side effects. For the correct dosage, a doctor or alternative practitioner should be consulted. With homeopathic remedies, the immune system can be strengthened even before the onset of a cold and a cold can be prevented if necessary.

If the first signs of a cold already exist, they should be treated symptomatically. For example, a nasal spray or nasal drops should be given for a blocked nose and cough syrup for coughs. Before medication is administered, a pediatrician should be consulted.

Babies and toddlers up to 12 years of age should not be given medication containing the active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), as this can lead to liver and brain damage. Caution is advised when using cold ointments and essential oils. These often contain menthol, which can lead to respiratory arrest in babies and small children when rubbed in or inhaled.

If the child has a fever, a fever-reducing medication should not be given immediately. Fever is a natural defence mechanism of the body and fights off pathogens. In addition, feverish children feel listless and usually do not spend their energy.

However, if the fever is lowered by medication, the child feels healthy and often does not spare itself sufficiently to cure the cold. Therefore, the administration of antipyretic drugs should be discussed with the pediatrician.
