Prevention

Spider veins alone do not represent a serious disease, mainly cosmetic reasons are in the foreground. However, they can give a first indication of diseases such as chronic venous insufficiency. They are often favoured by weaknesses of the connective tissue, which are mainly predisposition.

Thus spider veins often cannot be completely prevented, but something can still be done to prevent them. Spider veins can best be prevented by a normal weight, sufficient exercise and a healthy balanced diet. Sports like swimming, walking, walking and cycling are all beneficial.

Also treading water or taking a cold shower in the morning from bottom to top (from the feet to the thighs) can support the veins in the blood flow. Heavy alcohol consumption and a diet rich in sugar and fat are beneficial for the development of spider veins. Smoking is also bad for the blood vessels, which can also show up in the veins.

Other causes can also be disturbances in liver metabolism. Hormone metabolism disorders or hormone therapies such as hormone replacement therapy or the contraceptive pill, which give estrogens, weaken the vein wall and can cause the vein to become worn out and thick. Particularly during pregnancy, due to the increased blood volume, compression therapy with compression stockings is recommended to reduce or prevent these and other effects.

In addition, a lot of standing and sitting (especially with bent legs) can put strain on the veins, so it is advisable to include muscle exercises in the course of the day or to take a few steps. Foot circles or other exercises that activate the calf muscles can help here. Raising your legs also helps the venous return to the heart.

You can also put your feet higher than the rest of your body and do this at night (e.g. by putting them on a pillow). On long journeys by train/bus/car or plane, where walking around is not possible, wearing compression stockings is recommended to support blood return. Heart failure (heart failure) can also cause congestion in the veins because the heart cannot expel enough blood.

Spider veins in the face

The classic spider veins, which are mainly found on the legs, are primarily caused by a venous problem. The fine cobweb-like drawings on the face are called telangiectasias and are based on an expansion of the capillaries that are located in front of the veins. A synonym for telangiectasia of the face is couperosis.

Mostly its development is congenital, i.e. anchored in the genes, but numerous factors exert an influence. These include: …but they can also be a manifestation of a disease. Rosacea is a well known disease associated with the occurrence of telangiectasia.

This is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, which is accompanied by redness, itching, burning, pustules and inflammation of the eyes. The inflammation causes the vessels to react hypersensitively and dilate. Another group of diseases with telangiectasia are autoimmune diseases or the so-called collagenoses like lupus erythematosus.

Pathological immune complexes cause, among other things, vascular inflammation, which in this case leads to dilation of the capillaries. In most cases, however, the dilated veins in the face are harmless and not a sign of a serious disease. Treatment is therefore not absolutely necessary. – Age,
