Prices of Bepanthen® products

Of the Bepanthen® products, the Bepanthen® wound and healing ointment is the cheapest at about 2.75 € for a 20 g tube. The most expensive of the Bepanthen® range is the scar gel, for which you have to pay about 15€ per 20g. All other products are quite evenly priced between this high and low value.

Areas of application of Bepanthen®

The products of Bepanthen® are used for a wide variety of complaints or symptoms. For example, the different products are used for:

  • Dry lips
  • Small open wounds
  • Sunburn and burns
  • After tattoos
  • For scar treatment
  • For relief of itching

Especially in winter, the lips can dry out and become chapped due to the alternation of warm heating air and cold outside air. The cold in particular leads to a reduction in the metabolism of the skin cells, which thus produce less sebum.

However, as sebum is a protective function of the skin, it is easier for the skin to dry out and thus crack the lips. Bepanthen® cares for and protects against further damage to the skin. Those who do not want to smear a healing ointment on their lips can also use Bayer’s Bepanthol® range, which includes a lip care stick with dexpanthenol.

For this product there are also alternatives from other companies such as la Roche-Posay or Eucerin. In the case of actively bleeding wounds, the supply of a Bepanthen® cream is initially of no use because the active ingredients are immediately rinsed out of the tissue by the blood flow. However, as soon as the bleeding is stopped, it is recommended to clean and disinfect the wound under running water.

For the latter, Bepanthen® antiseptic wound cream is suitable, which is applied to the open wound for this purpose. Alternatively, another antiseptic can be taken and then Bepanthen® wound and healing ointment can be applied to the wound. As soon as scabs have formed on the wound, treatment with an antiseptic can be dispensed with and only the wound and healing ointment can be further treated.

It is important to note that in the case of lacerations, stab wounds, deep wounds and extensive injuries, self-treatment should be avoided and a doctor should be consulted instead. There is a product in the Bepanthen® product range that is specially designed for sunburn and burns, the Bepanthen® cooling foam spray. It cools the skin through the evaporation effect and thereby relieves pain.

As it does not have to be massaged in, it can also be applied painlessly. The active ingredient provitamin B5 promotes tissue healing and, in combination with the other ingredients, provides moisture, which is very important for skin damaged by burns. However, if the burned areas are too large, burns with blister formation or burns that do not heal after a few days, (further) application should be avoided and a doctor should be consulted instead.

Theoretically, the application of Bepanthen® Wound and Healing Ointment on sunburns and burns is also possible and helpful, but here the application may hurt more and cooling is not guaranteed. Provitamin B5 (dexpanthenol) is an active ingredient that is contained in many tattoo aftercare products. It promotes better wound healing and keeps the skin supple.

This is important because the quality of the tattoo can suffer if a crust forms shortly after the sting. With regard to this ingredient, Bepanthen® can also be used instead of special tattoo aftercare products. In this case it is recommended to apply the tattoo cream several times a day (it should not dry out) and especially after showering or after intensive sweating apply a new layer of the cream.

The manufacturer of the Bepanthen® range (Bayer) sells a special Bepanthen® scar gel which is supposed to heal fresh as well as older scars and thus make them more inconspicuous. Bepanthen® scar gel should be applied twice daily in the first month after the scar has formed, but only after the wound has closed. Like all Bepanthen® products, it contains dexpanthenol, which promotes scar/wound healing according to the above-mentioned active principle, as well as silicone, which forms a film on the skin surface and thus should prevent the newly formed skin from drying out.

The scar gel is sold with a special massage roller, which is to be used from the second month after the formation of the scar. Bayer recommends massaging the scar twice a day to increase blood circulation, as this helps to break down excess skin material and then applying Bepanthen® Scar Gel. The treatment should be carried out in this way for at least two months to achieve success.

Bayer also offers a special product to combat itching (pruritus): Bepanthen® Sensiderm cream for application to dry, itchy skin areas. It contains lipids (fats) similar to those found in the skin and the active ingredient dexpanthenol to moisturize the skin and restore the skin barrier. It also contains no fragrances or dyes to avoid irritating already damaged skin. However, this cream has no effect on itching caused by insect bites or allergic reactions, as it can neither neutralize the insect venom nor stop the allergic reaction.
