Probiotics for the oral cavity are commercially available as lozenges and, in some countries, as chewing gum. They are marketed as dietary supplements.
Structure and properties
The products contain millions of viable bacteria found in healthy pharyngeal and oral flora. These include:

Effects
The bacteria attach to the mucosa and normalize the oral flora by multiplying and displacing undesirable and cariogenic germs. also forms lantibiotics (salivaricin A2 and salivaricin B), which inhibit the growth of pathogens, such as from or . Numerous scientific studies have been conducted with the bacteria. However, more studies are needed.
Potential applications (selection)
Probiotics are used preventively and therapeutically:
- Prevention of dental caries.
- Diseases and inflammation of the mouth and throat, such as oral mucositis, sore throat, streptococcal angina, gingivitis (periodontitis) and oral thrush.
- Treatment of bad breath.
- Prevention of infectious diseases, such as otitis media.
Dosage
According to the package leaflet. The lozenges are usually dissolved slowly in the mouth once a day preferably after brushing the teeth.
Contraindications

Adverse effects
Probiotics are generally well tolerated. Possible rare adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions and gastrointestinal disturbances.
