Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of proctitis (rectal inflammation).

Family history

  • What is the general health of your relatives?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?

Social history

  • What is your profession?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Do you suffer from itching in the anal region?
  • Do you have pain during bowel movements?
  • Have you noticed blood admixtures (purulent?) or mucus in the stool?
  • Do you suffer from a constant feeling of urge to defecate?
  • Do you have a feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation?
  • Do you suffer from constipation?
  • Do you have pain in the hip region or pelvic area?
  • How long have the complaints already existed?
  • Do you change sexual partners frequently?
  • Do you have unprotected anal intercourse?
  • Do you engage in any special sexual practices (foreign bodies, anal intercourse)?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (infectious diseases esp. sexually transmitted diseases, intestinal diseases).
  • Sexual history (survey of male and female): question about anoreceptive anal intercourse (anoreceptive or passive is the one / the one in which the penis is inserted).
  • Radiation therapy in the pelvic area
  • Allergies (ingredients of medications, latex allergy (condoms)).
