Proctitis (Rectal Inflammation): Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate proctitis (rectal inflammation):

Main symptoms

  • Anorectal pain (in the left lower abdomen).
    • Dull pain symptomatology
    • Continuous pain that increases before defecation and decreases afterwards
  • Bloody side stool admixtures
  • Watery, partly bloody discharge/mucus
  • Tenesmus (constant painful urge to defecate), even when there is no stool.
  • Pruritus ani (anal itching)
  • Reddened anus
  • Feelings of soreness
  • Feeling of incomplete defecation (bowel evacuation).

Secondary symptoms

  • Flatulence (bloating) – the function of the sphincter may be impaired.
  • Constipation (constipation)
  • Pain in the hip and groin region.
  • Fecal incontinence (inability to retain stool).
