Prognosis | Bone fracture in the foot

Prognosis

The prognosis is relatively good for the various fractures of the foot bones, so that there is usually no permanent damage or restrictions on the load. As with any operation, infections or intolerance of the anaesthetics can occur during the operations mentioned above. Another complication that specifically affects the foot is delayed wound healing.

A dreaded complication, especially with a metatarsal fracture, is the so-called compartment syndrome. The fracture leads to vascular injury and thus to bleeding into the soft tissue. This increases the pressure in the affected tissue and nerves are compressed, resulting in a loss of nerve and muscle function.

This also results in a circulatory disorder, which can lead to the tissue dying off and the loss of the foot. The warning signs are pronounced circulatory disorders, shiny, swollen skin and sensory discomfort.
