Prognosis | Calf Strain

Prognosis

The prognosis of a calf strain is extremely positive. It is a common injury, which in almost all cases heals after a reasonable period of time. In the majority of cases it is not necessary to consult a physician.

Complications that can occur are caused by too early and, above all, too much strain after the calf strain. You should listen to your body and take the pain seriously as a warning signal. An unhealed calf strain can, in the worst case, lead to a rupture of the muscle fibres in the event of premature strain, possibly with injury to the tendons. Treating this injury then takes much longer than taking a few days off and giving the calf strain the time it needs.Careful stretching and gymnastic exercises after 3-4 days have an accelerating effect on healing as long as the patient is not overstrained.

Prophylaxis

Calf strain is an injury that can be prevented specifically with simple methods or at least the risk can be significantly reduced. As a compulsory task for every athlete, a careful warm-up program with subsequent stretching exercises should be completed before the load is increased. This can prevent calf strain.

In addition, suitable footwear with adequate suspension must be worn. Some sports stores offer a free running analysis for this purpose. When choosing a running route, you can make sure that the ground is level and without many roots, as the risk of incorrect loading is higher here. Finally, the extent of the training should be chosen so that you are not under maximum load too often and for too long, and that you allow your body to take regular breaks for regeneration.
