Prognosis | Cartilage damage behind the kneecap

Prognosis

The prognosis following the diagnosis of cartilage damage behind the patella is generally favorable. In most cases it can be assumed that healing is possible, but may take a long time. In many patients, the pain subsides spontaneously after a few weeks and even disappears completely. It is possible, however, that pain may reappear after years of freedom from symptoms. In rare cases, cartilage damage behind the kneecap can lead to osteoarthritis.

Prophylaxis

There are some behaviors that may prevent cartilage damage behind the kneecap.

  • Excessive training should be avoided in any case. Especially sports that are associated with an increased risk of damaging the cartilage should be avoided.

These include jogging, but also basketball, volleyball and cycling with high gear ratio.

  • One-sided loading of only one knee should also be avoided. If the entire body weight often has to be carried by one side only, this greatly increases the occurrence of cartilage damage.
  • Certain occupational groups that are associated with a greatly increased strain on the patella, such as tilers, should consciously spare the knee and avoid kneeling work. Alternatively, the use of a carpet pad can be recommended.
