Prognosis | Crohn’s disease

Prognosis

A cure for Crohn’s disease is still not possible today. Attempts are being made to bring the relapses under control with medication. Life expectancy in patients with optimally treated Crohn’s disease is generally barely or not at all limited.

However, it has been proven that Crohn’s disease patients have a significantly increased risk of developing small bowel cancer compared to the healthy normal population. Crohn’s disease is a chronic disease, a cure is not possible according to the current state of science. Since the disease can affect the entire digestive tract from the mouth to the rectum, it is not possible to simply remove the affected organ, unlike ulcerative colitis, in which only the colon is affected.

Also, drug therapy only aims to reduce the inflammation in the body and thus the disease activity.A causal therapy does not exist, partly because the exact cause of Crohn’s disease has not yet been identified. Nevertheless, under specialist therapy with current medications, a largely normal quality of life can be achieved in most patients.
