Prognosis

Even if complaints such as diarrhea and vomiting are not among the most pleasant sensations our body can experience, these symptoms are usually temporary if we pay sufficient attention to our fluid and salt balance and, even without medication, end within a few days. In the case of pronounced circulatory weakness, a hospital stay may be necessary. The mortality rate in western industrialized countries is negligible due to the excellent and always available medical care. In developing countries without this comprehensive medical care, gastro-enteritis often ends fatally due to the extreme loss of salt and fluid, which cannot be compensated without medical help.
